3 Quick SharePoint Migration tips for Power Users

Have a Plan

Goes without saying, you need a plan when migrating. But I usually only see IT and administrators making plans on how to migrate the servers, the databases, etc but what about the SharePoint Power Users? You need to make plan too! Analyze what you have already, document and see what you do accordingly.

Take the time to clean up old stuff

Make sure you take the time to look at your old SharePoint sites and cleanup the lists, document libraries, sites that you do not need anymore. No sense bringing them along the ride.

Versions, yes versions perhaps you did not realize that along the years you have accumulated quite a number of draft and other old versions. Do you still need them?

Migrate intelligently re-think certain architectures

Whether you’re migrating from SharePoint 2003 to 2007, from 2007 to 2010 or from any SharePoint to Office 365; Things have changed! New features have arrived like Documents Sets, Web Databases, Managed Metadata it’s time for you to take advantage of them and rethink your architecture.

To many times I have seen clients take the old, put it into the new and continue using it with minor upgrade to the way they work. It’s time to relook at your business process and reinvent. Perhaps you had multiple choice or lookup columns before that can be turned into managed metadata columns?

Think:

  • Content Types
  • Managed Metadata
  • Related Lists
  • Visio Services
  • InfoPath Lists or Libraries
  • Content Query Web Part
  • Search Center
  • And much more new features
